What do all these things have in common? Yahoo, Wikipedia, Flickr, Google Search, Google maps API, Myspace, Flickr API, Facebook, Google Earth and Youtube…
Yep. Very clever, they all have vowels… You should go check out OMW! if that’s your answer. So if I was to add Twitter, iPhones, Android, Augmented Reality and Spotify to the list?
Well some clever people will say, they’re all pillars of a digital revolution. Which, they are. However, let’s look at this through the eyes of the seeker. A human who is constantly seeking the next new thing for their kick. Because to us in a digital company, we love new stuff! So through our eyes…
… they’re all brain-messers! Every single one of them. Each pillar has been massively invested in, made people rich, and created an eco-system of other people (like us digital types) to get rich by. So every-time the next thing happens, we all feel an overwhelming urge to make the NEW attachment, the new TweetDeck, the new Mash-up, the new app and get rich, famous or die trying.
That’s quite a big thing to happen around twice a year! There’s a lot of opportunity to successfully fit around your day job. Or not! Because you’re fried.
How do we keep up with it then? Could we get rich? Also, for our day job as Digital Strategists with Thought Den, how do we offer it to our clients? Are the technologies ready to be consumed by the normal non-uber techie person? Will the new stuff still be around in 10 years time, or just crumbed under the hype?
It’s entirely possible as a seeker, maybe we shouldn’t be throwing the baby out with the bath water? To be honest, people still love browsing normal HTML sites and how long have they been around!
Is it about blowing away the hype and finding the core values of the app in hand, then offering it out as a solution? For example. Twitter, use it to hold conversations. Google maps, use it show people where to go. YouTube, use it to entertain.
Maybe after all that, go have a break, go outside and talk to a normal human being over a glass of wine.
Ahhhhh.
