How much data do you want to share?

Re: the chat about transparency in data usage. What tools, effects, activities could we promote in today’s world that would promote transparency in data usage?

In the world of products, we have fair trade. A brand which stands to promote good business in third worlds and makes use of strapline like, “look mum, no guns were here!” and “no slick tony’s were involved in the trading of these good”. Which then in turn the consumer chooses to trust and purchase goods from, as they feel good about sticking one to the gun-welding slick tony man. And in such allows them to look down their noses at Tesco own brand banana buyers.

So, in the stolen words of Banksy, “good artists copy, great artists rip the whole fucker off”. Could we create a brand device so blindly beautiful like the 2012 Olympics that when people see it, they cheer, “Hurrah, I will use this company, as I can see where my data is being pawned off”. A badge on apps, sites, shop windows, CCTV cameras would instantly show how much data you’d need to give away to participate.

Note, it’s not always about saying, “we will not sell your data”, but allowing people that fleeting moment of choice before the choose which brand to sign up too. Because the benefits of free picture uploads on Facebook might be worth letting them know your age and full name.

Looking at other online devices that have worked in my world of coding, are there features like below that could inspire techies to adhere to those standards.

  • Digg
  • Facebook
  • MySpace
  • StumbleUpon
  • Delicious
  • Gmail
  • Share/Bookmark
